for journalists

I’m a coach and journalist on a mission to empower journalists and detoxify journalism.

Journalism has a people problem.

It’s not that there aren't enough people; it's that too much of the industry doesn't treat its people particularly well.

The work itself is vital to our very democracy, rewarding — and grueling.

The news doesn't care if you need a break, and most newsrooms don't have the capacity to give you one anyway.

Too many journalists are overworked, underappreciated and on an out-of-control trauma treadmill.

We need a better way.

We need a way that honors journalists’ humanity and autonomy, a way that is as much about the people who produce the news as it is about profiting from it.

Coaching isn't the only solution to journalism’s people problem, but it's a powerful one. I can’t take on the whole industry — yet — but I can meet individual journalists where they are. I can help them get grounded and reclaim their power and agency.

You don't control the treadmill, but you can control how you engage with it. You can set boundaries that center you as a human being.

There is a person behind your byline, and that person deserves the chance to write their own story.

About Me

black woman throwing up a peace sign

I’m Karen Hawkins, a longtime journalist, serial entrepreneur and mouthy Black lesbian feminist.

After nearly 30 years in journalism, I went back to school for coaching in 2025, and I’m certified by the International Coaching Federation (ACC).

My past roles include story editor at The 19th, co-publisher and editor-in-chief of the Chicago Reader. I’m the founder of Rebellious Magazine for Women and co-host of Of Course I’m Not OK: The Podcast.

I’m an award-winning reporter and editor whose journalism background also includes positions at The Associated Press, the Windy City Times and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. I live outside of Chicago with more cats than I’m willing to disclose.
